The LEARNS partners are pleased to announce the latest edition of Youth Impact, our publication for mentoring, tutoring, and other youth-serving programs. Ever wonder what a blog, wiki, or RSS feed is? Or what the fuss is all about with MySpace or Facebook? Or if any of these might help you as a volunteer or program manager working with youth.
Check out "MySpace and YouTube and Blogs, Oh My! Enhancing Your Youth Program With Web 2.0 Tools," it explains key Web 2.0 technologies and offers ideas on how volunteers and programs can put them to use.

Download the publication (PDF) at http://snipurl.com/3l2r3. Archived issues of Youth Impact are also available at the Resource Center at http://snipurl.com/youthimpact. To receive new issues by e-mail, subscribe to our electronic mailing list at http://snipurl.com/learns_youth_impact.

LEARNS is a partnership of the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory and the Bank Street College of Education. We are funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service to provide training and technical assistance to projects focused on tutoring, mentoring, literacy, and out-of-school time.

For additional tools, training, and information visit The Resource Center at www.nationalservice.gov/resources.

'Letter 2 a Teen - Becoming the Best I can Be' can now be purchased as an eBook, together with a free monthly newsletter etc. The book has now been endorsed by leading figures in the world of youth mentoring, as well as parents, educators and teenagers (of course!). These comments and reviews are available on the websites www.teenletter.com and www.yess.co.nz

Teachable Moments

Opportunity Knocks
Back to school time provides new opportunities for youth and adults. Healthy Teen Network created the resource, "Opportunity Knocks: Using Teachable Moments to Convey Safer Sex Messages to Young People" as a tool to help adults talk to youth about sexual and reproductive health issues. Adults can be most effective by providing the information and support needed to promote responsible decision-making in youth and help ensure transition to adulthood is safe and healthy.

Education is crucial to life success and health for all youth, including pregnant and parenting teens. This policy brief, "Keeping Pregnant and Parenting Students from Dropping Out: A Guide for Policymakers and Schools," created by Healthy Teen Network and the National Women's Law Center, explains how Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 protects pregnant and parenting students' rights to an equitable education.

Grants and Funding Opportunities:
Pay It Forward Foundation Offers Mini-Grants for Youth
Deadline: September 15, 2008

A program of the Pay It Forward Foundation ( http://payitforwardfoundation.org ), Pay It Forward Mini-Grants are designed to fund one-time-only service-oriented projects identified by youth as activities they would like to perform to benefit their school, neighborhood, or greater community.
Projects must contain a "pay it forward" focus -- that is, they must be based on the concept of one person doing a favor for others, who in turn do favors for others, with the results growing exponentially -- to be considered for a mini-grant.
Mini-grants of up to $500 are available. Because funding is limited, projects requesting smaller amounts will be given priority.
Visit the Pay It Forward Foundation Web site for complete grant program guidelines and information on the Pay It Forward concept.

William T. Grant and Spencer Foundations Seek Proposals for the Development and Improvement of the Measurement of Classroom Quality
Deadline: November 3, 2008 (Letters of Inquiry)

The William T. Grant Foundation ( http://wtgrantfoundation.org/ ) and the Spencer Foundation ( http://www.spencer.org/ ) have announced their joint 2009 Request for Proposals for the Development and Improvement of the Measurement of Classroom Quality. This RFP is part of the foundations' broader effort to build theory and evidence about how classrooms affect youth and how to improve those effects.
The foundations will support a small group of research projects, one to three years in duration, with award amounts ranging from $50,000 to $500,000 each, including all direct and indirect costs.
The foundations will consider several types of proposals: a) new, stand-alone measurement development studies; b) add-on studies in which new measurement development work supplements an existing field study; and c) further analysis of existing data to improve measurement. The foundations anticipate that the third category, further analysis studies, will have budgets at the lower end of the award range, add-on studies will have budgets at the middle of the range, and new stand-alone studies will have budgets toward the upper end of the range.
Applicants must be employed at a nonprofit institution, either in the United States or abroad.
Complete program information is available at the William T.Grant and Spencer Foundation Web sites.
