There is a chance however that we will be presented with another opportunity this fall to bring them back to our area. Also, it's time to startplanning our monthly YDN meetings again now that summer is almost over. YDN meetings were held every third Wednesday of the month prior to the summer season. Here now is your opportunity to choose our next meeting date. The third Wednesday of September is the 17th, another option would be Thursday the 18th of September. Klamath Tribes Restoration Celebration Pow Wow
KLAMATH TRIBES RESTORATION CELEBRATION AND POW-WOW at the Chiloquin Rodeo Grounds in Chiloquin, OR will be held August 22 through Aug 24. This annual event marks the anniversary of the "restoration" of federal recognition for the Klamath Tribes. It includes a rodeo, pow-wow, fun race, softball tournament, arts & crafts, great food and much more! All events are open to the public and are drug and alcohol free! Chiloquin Visions in Progress still needs volunteer help for the event above...
Youth Center concession booth at the Restoration Celebration.They are selling drinks (soda, water, ice tea, lemonade, coffee, slushies, hot chocolate) and doing 50-50 raffles at the Pow wow (High School track) from Friday, August 22nd – Sunday August 24th. Also,theywill beselling food concessions (hot dogs, hamburgers, nachos, candy, otter pops, soda, water) on Saturday August 23rd only at the Rodeo grounds concession booth. Chiloquin High Schoolstudents have been hard at work organizing these concessions, and appreciate any help you can give. If you cannot volunteer at the concession booth this weekend, but would still like to help,they still need folks to pick up food and supplies in Klamath Falls, set up before the event, and clean up after the event (the week of August 25th).

OSUAugust Fest, Field Day
Food, Farming and Family Fun! The 2nd annual Field Day, hosted by the Oregon State University Klamath Basin Research and Extension Center, will beheld on Saturday August 23rd from 9 AM to 3 PM. This is a great opportunity to learn and interact with your local OSU research and extension facility, staff, and volunteers on topics such as 4-H, gardening, health and nutrition, natural resources, livestock, and agricultural research. Event includes children's activities, classes and demonstrations, as well as live entertainment and food. All events, activities, and classes are free. No registration is necessary. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OPENS LEADERSHIP KLAMATH ENROLLMENT
Leadership Klamath 2009 begins September 18th, 2008. The Klamath County Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for the 21st year of the program designed to prepare tomorrow's leaders today. "The goal of Leadership Klamath is to promote quality community leadership in Klamath County," says Amanda Blodgett, Chamber Program Coordinator, "this goal is met by educating current and future leaders about how our community works as a whole." The program consists of ten one-day sessions over ten months with each session focusing on a specific topic or industry such as: Tourism, Emergency Services, City and County Government, Education, the Judicial System and Economic Development. Leadership Klamath offers a tremendous opportunity for participants to expand their knowledge of the inner workings of Klamath County and network with potential business associates. Graduates of the program have consistently become involved in community activities and taken a leadership role in improving the quality of life in Klamath through public service. "If you are interested in learning how our community really works Leadership Klamath is a great resource." says Charles Massie, Chamber Executive Director, he went on to add, "You will meet the movers and shakers, it is a great opportunity for business people, educators and anyone interested in community program development."
Applications
are being accepted for the 2008-2009 session. Deadline for registration is August 29, 2008. The first session will be on Thursday, September 18, 2008 and continues the third Thursday of each month through June 2009. Lunch is included in the tuition and graduates receive a certificate of completion upon finishing the program. Klamath County Chamber of Commerce members get a $100 discount on their tuition to Leadership Klamath.

MENTOR’s National Mentoring Institute is pleased to announce the launch of a new Online Community for mentors to network with other mentors, obtain support and access resources to develop stronger, more impactful mentoring relationships. The LEARNS team is pleased to offer a new online course for tutoring, mentoring, out-of-school time, and other youth-development programs.
Designed for both new and veteran program staff, "Youth Impact: Starting and Strengthening Quality Programs" will help you find, prepare, and keep the right members and volunteers to work with youth.

Using interactive elements, audio-visuals, and downloadable documents, the course highlights and puts into your hands best practices used by effective youth-serving programs. It also provides links to additional resources for support and training to help your program succeed.

Many examples and resources in the course speak specifically to programs funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
Nonetheless, the course will be helpful for many types of youth-serving agencies.

William T. Grant Foundation Invites Letters of Inquiry for, Field-Initiated Grants Program
Deadline: September 3, 2008; January 8, 2009; April 1, 2009; and September 9, 2009

The William T. Grant Foundation ( http://wtgrantfoundation.org/ ) is accepting Letters of Inquiry for its field-initiated grants program. The foundation's current research interests are understanding how social settings such as families, schools, peer groups, and organizations work; how they affect youth; and how they can be improved. The foundation's interests also focus on when, how, and under what conditions research evidence is used in policy and practice that affect youth, and how its use can be improved.

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must be employed at a nonprofit 501(c)(3) institution, either in the United States or abroad; submit a project that is consistent with the foundation's current research interests; address issues that have compelling relevance for theory, policies, and/or practices affecting the settings of youth between the ages of 8 and 25 in the United States or a vulnerable sub-population of those youth; reflect high standards of evidence and rigorous methods, commensurate with the proposal's goals. The deadlines for Letters of Inquiry are September 3, 2008; January 8, 2009; April 1, 2009; and September 9, 2009.

Best Buy Invites Applications for K-12 Technology Education Program
Deadline: October 12, 2008

The Best Buy ( http://www.BestBuy.com/CommunityRelations ) Teach Award program recognizes and rewards creative uses of interactive technology in K-12 classrooms. In 2008, the program will award a total of $2 million to accredited K-12 public, private, parochial, magnet, and charter schools in the United States and Puerto Rico.

Winning programs focus on kids using technology to learn standards-based curriculum rather than on teaching students to use technology or educators using technology that children aren't able to use hands-on. Awards ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 each will be granted to programs that engage students at any grade level by creatively integrating interactive technology into the curriculum. All awards are in the form of Best Buy Gift Cards. Best Buy Teach Awards of $10,000 each will be granted to up to fifteen schools serving ninth-grade students that display the greatest creativity in their programs/projects and the clearest vision of how to increase the school's use of interactive technology. The emphasis on ninth-grade classrooms aligns with Best Buy's new @15 philanthropic focus (http://www.bestbuyinc.com/community_relations/our_focus.htm). Accredited nonprofit K-12 public, private, parochial, magnet, and charter schools are eligible to apply. All applicant schools must be nonprofit and located in the United States or Puerto Rico. Kids In Need Foundation Accepting Applications for Teacher Grants
Deadline: September 30, 2008

The School, Home, & Office Products Association Kids In Need Foundation ( http://www.kidsinneed.net/ ) offers Kids In Need Teacher Grants to provide K-12 educators with funding to provide innovative learning opportunities for their students. The Kids In Need Teacher Grants are funded by retail and education credit union sponsors.
Teacher Grant awards range from $100 to $500 each, and are used to finance creative classroom projects. Typically, two hundred to three hundred grants are awarded each year. In 2006, 270 grants totaling more than $110,000 were awarded. Applications are judged on the basis of innovativeness and merit, clarity of objectives, replication feasibility, suitability of evaluation methods, and cost effectiveness. All certified K-12 teachers in the U.S. are eligible. Retail sponsors and designated education credit unions make the grant applications available at their outlets during the back-to-school season. Applications from the sponsors are also available on the Kids In Need Foundation Web site.

Lowe's Toolbox for Education K-12 Grant Program Opens Fall 2008 Cycle
Deadline: October 17, 2008

The Lowe's Toolbox for Education grant program, an initiative of the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation ( http://lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=pg&p=AboutLowes/Community ), is dedicated to supporting parent-teacher groups at schools across the United States.

Any individual nonprofit public K-12 school or parent group associated with a nonprofit public K-12 school is eligible to apply. Parent groups that are applying (PTO, PTA, etc.) must have an independent tax ID number and official 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. Groups without this status should apply through their school. Pre-schools are not eligible at this time. Applicant schools must be more than two years old. The grant program gives preference for funding requests that have a permanent impact such as facility enhancement (both indoor and outdoor as well as landscaping/clean-up projects. Projects that encourage parent involvement and build stronger community spirit are encouraged.

Up to $5,000 per school is available. In order to apply, the requested grant amount must be between $2,000 and $5,000. Lowe's will donate $5 million to schools and school parent teacher groups at more than 1,000 different schools during the school year. The Fall 2008 deadline for submitting applications is October 17, 2008. However, if 1,500 applications are received before the application deadline, the application process will close.
