WEB RESOURCES
ReadWriteThink.org Launches Enhanced Summer Literacy Site
For years, ReadWriteThink.org has provided educators with hundreds of free lesson plans covering a wide range of K-12 reading and language arts-related topics. Now parents, camp counselors, and others gearing up for a summer of fun, educational experiences can take advantage of new additions to Learning Beyond the Classroom, a companion website that features everything non-teachers need to promote literacy learning and practice even when school is out. Learning Beyond the Classroom, initially launched in June 2007 by the International Reading Association (IRA) and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), extends the reach of teacher-popular reading and writing lesson plans for K-12 students to an out-of-school setting. Learning Beyond the Classroom is part of ReadWriteThink.org, a nonprofit website maintained by IRA and NCTE with support from the Verizon Foundation, and in association with the Thinkfinity consortium. Last year, more than 10 million visitors visited the site for free lesson plans, interactive student materials, Web resources, and standards for K-12 classroom teachers of reading and the English language arts.

New Grant Portal
Bank of America announced a new, national Web site through which non-profit organizations can research and apply for grants from nearly 70 foundations managed by Bank of America. In its role of distributing more than $350 million annually to charities on behalf of the foundations for which it serves as trustee or grant-making agent, Bank of America Philanthropic Management now offers enhanced search and online access to detailed information about an array of foundations.
The company has redesigned and significantly broadened the capabilities of its public-facing "Search for Grants" site, providing non-profits with a single point of access to the financial services industry's most sophisticated, comprehensive online resource in support of these organizations' fundraising efforts. The following key enhancements made to the new Bank of America "Search for Grants" site improve non-profit organizations' online grant research and application experience, increase fundraising efficiency, and offer greater overall awareness of the private foundations managed by the company: Find a Foundation, Single Point of Access, Grant Making History, Standard Application Format, and Increased Transparency. Web Site Helps Teachers Create Collaborative Learning Projects

One of the web's leading sites for teachers is partnering with an innovative technology company in a pilot program to help teachers create collaborative learning projects.

TeachersFirst and TRintuition have created the Building Learners Project, a unique effort that will allow teachers to create safe online projects within their own classrooms -- or linked with classrooms across the corridor or around the world. The nonprofit TeachersFirst, known for its extensive collection of resources and its teacher-friendly support, recently celebrated its tenth anniversary. The site -- by teachers, for teachers -- has thousands of members in more than 50 countries, and averages more than 50,000 page views daily. TRintuition is a new "Web 2.0" company; its workBench product makes it easy even for those who are not technically proficient to create visually-rich websites that encourage creative collaboration within any group. The Building Learners partnership will allow 100 teachers to participate this year using the full premium-level tools of the workBench at no charge (a limited-feature free version is also available). Examples of the ways teachers intend to use the product include connecting American students with Spanish-speaking counterparts around the globe, encouraging learners to see the connections between classic poetry and current events, and integrating arts and technology online. Both TeachersFirst and TRintuition will provide extensive support for participating teachers. Members of TeachersFirst can fill out a simple form to apply for participation in the Building Learners Project (TeachersFirst membership is free). http://www.teachersfirst.com/, http://www.trintuition.com/.

Foundation for Child Development Invites Proposals for PK-3, Research Small Grants Program

The program has three major goals: to stimulate research that spans early education and early elementary education to inform PK-3 efforts across the United States; to foster multi- disciplinary perspectives and build a field of research that examines how children's education and home contexts influence developmental outcomes from PK through at least third grade; and to increase the use of datasets that can inform FCD's PK-3 initiative. Researchers must use one or more datasets included in the PK-3 Data Resource Center: The First Six Years of Schooling and Beyond ( http://fcd-us.org/programs/programs_show.htm?doc_id=677373 ).
Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. or its equivalent in one of the behavioral and social sciences or in an allied professional field (e.g., public policy, public health, education, social work, nursing, medicine.) Applicants must be U.S. citizens, legal per- manent residents, or those who have employment authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services for the duration of the grant. Junior scholars are encouraged to apply. The program will provide a maximum of four awards of up to $50,000 each. All funds are to be used over a period from one to two years.

Community Colleges Invited to Apply for MentorLinks: Advancing Technological Education
Deadline: June 13, 2008

The American Association of Community Colleges ( http://www.aacc.nche.edu/ ), in partnership with the National Science Foundation ( http://nsf.gov/ ), has announced a national grant competition for the MentorLinks program.

MentorLinks is designed to provide technical assistance and networking opportunities for the purpose of improving under-graduate programs that prepare technicians in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. AACC invites proposals from member colleges interested in working with a community college mentor who has successfully planned and implemented a major change in a program in a high-technology field. The grant is primarily a professional development and technical assistance program, with emphasis on the development of a mutually beneficial mentoring relationship. Grant awards will be made in the amount of $15,000 each for the two-year grant period, with primary emphasis on opportunities for technical assistance and professional development as part of the mentoring relationship. Colleges are invited to apply in the following program areas: aquarium science/aquaculture; bio-technology; chemical technology; environmental and energy technology; geographic information systems; information technology; nanotechnology; manufacturing technology; and multimedia technology.

Examples of activities to be supported by the grant and mentoring relationships include designing a new program/curricula; implementing changes in an ongoing program that needs to be more responsive to industry/employer needs; developing or redesigning curriculum or materials; building training programs for faculty and staff; recruiting students; marketing initiatives relevant to the project; engaging local industry/employers for intern- ships or other field experiences for students or faculty; and evaluation results.
