Community Organizing Boosts Student Achievement!!!

Community organizing can provide a significant boost to student achievement among young people from low-income and underserved neighborhoods, a new study from the Annenberg Institute for School Reform (http://www.annenberginstitute.org/ ) at Brown University finds.

The report, Organized Communities, Stronger Schools: A Preview of Research Findings, is based on preliminary results from the six-year, $4.8 million Community Involvement Program funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. According to CIP director Norm Fruchter, the study confirms that by participating in community organizing efforts, members of the community increase their civic engagement and knowledge of education issues.

The study also found that education-related organizing is related to improvements in student achievement such as increased graduation rates and college enrollment, and that such efforts strengthened school-community relationships and stimulated changes in policy, practices, and resource allocation.

The full study, which was initiated in 2001, is expected to be released this summer and will include an analysis of the specific organizing strategies used in each community: Austin, Texas; the Bronx, New York; Chicago; Los Angeles; Miami; Oakland; Philadelphia; and Milwaukee. Each site received $100,000 per year from Mott to support its organizing work around education.

"Education reform is about changing the life outcomes of young people, particularly in low-income neighborhoods," Fruchter said. "Organizing helps families discover and use their power to make those changes both meaningful and sustainable."

"Study Confirms Positive Impacts of Community Organizing on Education."

Customer Relationship Management Software Offered to Nonprofits

MPower has announced that it will offer its open-source customer-relationship management (CRM) software FREE of license fees to nonprofit organizations, PNN Online reported March 12.

The company also will make the source code for the CRM program available to nonprofits so they can customize the software to meet their unique needs. The program can be used to manage donation processing, fulfillment, event and volunteer management, call-center and mail-processing activity tracking, and major donor relations, as well as integrating data from sources such as direct mail, television and radio, online, telemarketing, events, personal contact, newsletters and subscriptions, according to the company.

"MPower's move to offer its industry-leading CRM software as open source is nothing short of
revolutionary for the nonprofit community," said Karen Jacobs, vice president of finance at Precept International, an MPower client. "It is as important a development for nonprofits as the Internet, which has become a critical tool for cultivating constituent relationships and driving fundraising. MPower is the next big thing for charitable organizations."

The CRM software can be downloaded online at theMPower website.

McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation Accepting Applications for Academic Enrichment and Teacher Development Grants

Deadline: May 1, 2008

Headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, the McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation (http://www.mccartheydressman.org/ ) was created in recognition of the struggle educators often face in bringing truly exceptional teaching to their students. The foundation awards grants to those projects and/or initiatives with significant potential to augment the educational experiences for youth of all backgrounds.

The foundation is now accepting applications for its Academic Enrichment Grants and Teacher Development Grants. Non-Profits are encouraged.

Academic Enrichment Grants are designed to develop in-class and extracurricular programs that improve student learning. These grants seek to maximize innovation and results in classrooms and education departments by funding programs that nurture the intellectual, artistic, and creative abilities of children from low-income households. Successful applicants may receive grants of up to $10,000 each per year for a maximum of three years.

Teacher Development Grants seek to increase the effectiveness of individual educators and small teams of teachers by funding the formation and implementation of groundbreaking K-12 classroom instruction. Grantees may be awarded amounts of up to $10,000 each per year for a maximum of three years. The program provides opportunities for teachers to integrate fresh strategies that encourage critical inquiry and to observe the effect of those strategies on students. Teachers have the opportunity to reflect and write about their projects and to share their observations with other teachers.

Eligibility requirements, program overviews, and applications are available at the foundation's Web site.
