Oregon Mentors Training Initiative
Do you wish your program had a bigger budget for training? Are high-quality trainings hard to find? Oregon Mentors wants to help with both problems. We'll be using a portion of the money we received at the 2007 Luncheon for a training initiative, to be launched this fall. Oregon Mentors is providing scholarships to trainings... between $50 to $250 to every Oregon Mentors registered program. The funds your program receives can be used to sign up any staff or volunteer for any training, consultation fee, or network fee through Technical Assistance for Community Services (TACS). To learn more about TACS, visit them at www.tacs.org. The amount of money a program is eligible for is based on several factors, including: submission of annual data, following minimum best practice standards, etc. Stay tuned for more information about this summer. Applications Due! Summer Institute on Youth Mentoring

Study Finds Troubling Gaps in Volunteer Screening by Nonprofits
One in three U.S. nonprofit organizations conducts no background checks on volunteers, and roughly one in eight does no screening at all, says a report released today by the National Center for Victims of Crime, the nation's leading advocacy group for crime victims.
Although the majority of surveyed nonprofit human service organizations conduct some screening, most agencies that serve vulnerable populations could benefit from more thorough and comprehensive volunteer screening practices. Read the whole article here http://www.pnnonline.org/article.php?sid=8138
